Your Dietitian Nutritionist Credentialing Roadmap
Starting the credentialing process can feel overwhelming — especially with different licenses, payer rules, and state requirements. This page gives you a clear, simple path so you know exactly where to begin.
Whether you are a dietitian, nutritionist, CNS, or CNS candidate, follow the steps below to determine the best route for insurance credentialing and practice setup.
1. Identify Your Provider Type
Credentialing requirements depend on your credentials and state laws.
Choose the option that fits you:
Registered Dietitian (RDN)
State-Licensed Nutritionist (LN, LDN, CN, etc.)
Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS)
CNS Candidate (state-dependent)
MS Nutrition Graduate / Clinical Nutritionist

2. Review State Licensure Rules
Your state determines:
what title you can use
whether you can provide MNT
which insurers allow non-RDN providers
whether CNS/CN/LN can credential independently

3. Choose Your Credentialing Path
Once your license and state allow it, select the route that matches your goals:

4. Prepare Your Essentials
Before credentialing starts, you’ll need:
NPI (Type 1 and Type 2 if group)
CAQH profile (updated + unlocked)
State license (if required)
Business entity (LLC or sole proprietor)
EIN
EMR setup (Kalix or other platforms)
